Q. Is it a sin to watch movies in which the Lord’s name is taken in vain? Should I mute it or skip scenes when this happens?

A. No, it is not a sin, although it may be an unwise choice. It may be upsetting or distracting to you, but that does not mean it is a sin. You are not speaking the dialogue, you are not responsible for the script, and so forth, so there is no way it can be a sin for you. This is a form of hypervigilance that is unnecessary and will lead to nowhere healthy.

Q. A friend of mine shared with me his experience of compassion inside the confessional for a particular sin. I shared his experience—both the sin and the priest’s advice—with others. Am I excommunicated? Did I commit a mortal sin?

A. I presume that this concern must have something to do with your understanding of the “seal of confession.” I cannot imagine what else it might be referring to. The short and long answer to your query is the same: no, you are not excommunicated, and you did not sin. You shared a wonderful experience of confession with a friend. We need more, not less, of this kind of sharing of God’s mercy.
